Equality in Civil and Political
Rights
Traditionally, civil rights
are considered as rights pertaining to human beings'
civil liberties while political rights are those that
empower citizens to participate in the establishment
and administration of government. A more expansive view
of human rights in the civil and political fields however
considers these rights as those associated with the
individuality and personhood of human beings, their
relationships with other individuals (in the family
and community), and their relationship with the state.
These rights include the:
o right to life
o right to be free from torture
o right to be free from slavery
o right to liberty and security of person
o freedom of movement
o freedom of thought, conscience and religion
o freedom of expression
o freedom of association
o freedom of religion
o equality before the law
o right to marry and to found a family
o right to equality in rights and responsibilities as
to marriage,
during marriage, and at its dissolution
o right to participate in public affairs
o right to vote and be elected
