ABOUT US
CEDAW Watch Philippines aims to promote women's human rights through the popularization of and effective implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
It is a network of women individuals and groups involved in women's human rights advocacy at the national and international levels.
The network promotes awareness of CEDAW amongst government, civil society organizations and the public in general through educational campaigns. Educating the public about the importance and critical role of human rights treaty bodies for the defense of women's human rights, the network will develop pro-active citizens who can effectively monitor government's compliance with CEDAW.
While using CEDAW as a major instrument towards the formation of and realization of the goal of women's human rights, the network maintains that women's human rights are much broader than just the CEDAW treaty itself. The network advocates for laws to be aligned with international obligations/treaties such as CEDAW. In working on CEDAW, the network deals with two faces and dynamism: (a) international level and (b) national or local level. It believes that advocacy must be strengthened at the local level.
Objectives
of the Network
Recruit members and formally
organize a CEDAW Watch network/forum of CEDAW advocates
that shall sustain a system of monitoring and advocacy
for women's human rights in the Philippines.
Activate an electronic mentoring
and monitoring system among CEDAW Watch members
and affiliates.
Conduct orientation briefing for
key legislators and legislative staff on CEDAW and
legislative agenda for women's rights issues in
the Philippines.
Dialogue with various women NGOs
and CSOs on complementary initiatives at policy
advocacy and resource mobilization.
The network serves two important functions:
-
As a monitoring mechanism by ensuring that the government will not get away with its commitment to protect women's human rights; and,
-
As a resource center leading the popularization of CEDAW. CEDAW is not widely known to the public or even to the government officials/employees even if it has been in existence for twenty-five years. The network will be able to bring concrete programs to enrich and inform women.
